--What has my day been like? Oh I'll tell you.
For my Psychology class we are required to participate in a Psychological Study happening on campus to earn 10 credit hours. We can participate in a study or write 2-3 research papers to earn these hours. Honestly, I am not going to write a paper if I can just give some of my blood for credit, and science none the less.
So my teacher invited two of the "well trained" phlebotomy students from our university to come to our class today and draw our blood. They invited us to come up two at a time and of course I was the first person. I was genuinely excited to be getting credit so easily. I rolled my right shirt sleeve up because in the past a phlebotomist once told me it's my easiest arm to draw blood from. I thought I was being very helpful. The lady came over, tied that rubber band around my arm and started poking me. This is normal. When she was talking to herself and made a final poke to some vein on the side of arm saying "This is the one." I thought to myself, this is not so normal. She proceeded to clean my arm off then take the needle to my arm skin in a very odd place for one to draw blood from. She stuck the needle in, then continued to fish around under my skin for the vein. She never found it I guess. So she tried my left arm, told me it would be a lot easier, and failed once again to draw blood.
She asked the man if he could try, telling me he was a lot more practiced than she was. Comforting I thought. He tried my left arm again in a different place, failed, then moved onto my right arm. By this time I had three holes collectively. And before I knew it, I had four. This is how fifth needle was used:
Man: "This vein will get us what we need, I promise."
Me: ... (I gave him a reassuring smile, I was silent most of the time)
Man: "Alright you're going to feel another ,hopefully small, pinch."
"Hmm... I thought I for sure got your vein that time, I definitely felt it go in..."
Lady holding the test tubes:"Maybe you need to go in further."
Me: *nervous laugh*
Man: "Probably... let me just.. Oh. (he then quickly pulled the needle out and placed a piece of gauze on my arm. The gauze was immediately soaking in my blood.)
Me:"Should it be bleeding that much?"
Man:"Um... I went straight through your vein so... (he puts four pieces of gauze on my arm, then wraps tape around my arm four times.) You'll want to keep that on for the majority of the day..."
Me:"Okay..."
--So the rest of class I can just feel all four layers of gauze soaking up my blood. And at the end of class I peaked under the tape and none of the gauze was white anymore. As I was walking out the door the man stopped me, handed me some more gauze, a roll of tape and told me "In a about twenty more minutes, you'll want to put this on..." Then he walked back to finish drawing someones blood. That's what today was like.
